  • A temporary offering space as a venue for shopping, performance, and events in the heart of North Beach.

  • An affordable accessible space for makers and artists to display and sell their works and wares.

  • An activation of empty space during a San Francisco real estate crisis when many buildings sit vacant.

The old bank at 580 Green Street lies vacant no more.  After over three years of sitting empty, This otherwise incredibly vibrant six-street intersection is alive again and filled with art culture and community.   The doors of the old Citi Bank are open and space has been reimagined with the goal of helping to reinvigorate this historic and vibrant heart of the city. The lights are on, shining, and colorful. The iconic three-domed bank on the corner has been activated as a holiday pop-up shop and art gallery. The organizers are welcoming and sell locally made goods, fashion, speakers, crafts, and art from local artists.  It will be open every day from now until the end of the year. “The goal is to help other makers and artists access amazing retail space and create abundance for the holidays. We want to bring hope, prosperity, and cheer to the neighborhood by creating a vibrant spot for the community to gather.

Recreation Sound Systems, a local start-up company making sustainable portable speakers, saw an opportunity in the vacant space on the corner of Green, Columbus, Stockton @ Beach Blanket Babylon Boulevard. With an MC/vocalist as the CEO and founder and most of the staff respected local DJs, Recreation Sound is obsessed with audio quality, disrupting systems that do not work, and music/art as a lifestyle. They develop and supply products and services to support these interests.  Based out of the Node coworking space in North Beach, with online sales at www.recreationsound.com they are working to get into more retail stores. Their products are currently curated in a few hand-picked brick and mortar storefronts including, UNIQ SF in the Upper Haight, and 510 Brand in Lake Merritt, Oakland.  Now they are also at 580 Green Street here in North Beach.

¨We´ve been staring at this empty bank building for years!¨ - new, yet loyal customer

“This is exactly what our community has needed”-Fred, local artist

Working with NEMS (North East Medical Services), a local non-profit and the current gracious owners of the bank building. Also in collaboration with various neighboorhood organizations such as the North Beach Business Association, Telegraph Hill Dwellers, North Beach Neighbors, and local gallery and business owners alike.  Recreation has opened a storefront for not only their speakers and lifestyle products but for local artists and makers who may not be able to afford their own storefront in this age of out-of-control rent. This pop-up shop for the holidays will hopefully only be the beginning, and Local Maker Mart, as a project of Recreation Sound Systems, hopes to transmute vacant spaces and their stagnant energy into vibrant activated spaces that support the local community
